Govt opp review key policies

In contrast to the US government, India's government is not considering the impact of this policy.

Solicitor General Gaurav Gupta said, "We should not assume that the issue that is at the forefront of the review is a fundamental security issue."

But he refused to say whether it would be discussed again at the upcoming meeting.

Snowy hydro to be exempt from privatisation push

The decision could see the private sector offloading on the complex system of pipes, lines and generators used around the world to provide energy for about half the country's electricity needs.

There are also concerns about the impact on public and economic health, especially for residents of marginal areas where hydro is used.

The Coalition said it would continue to seek to ensure competition was preserved.

"This decision has led to a massive reduction in the cost of supplying our country's electricity. In many areas this has meant a reduction in the amount of energy used in the homes and businesses of those in marginal areas. It's in the public interest that we keep competition a real issue at the level of the state and council," it said in a statement.

But the Greens had been calling on the Coalition to do more since the decision was announced.

"While the Government can and must continue to ensure competition for power generation is maintained, it's critical that competition be free of privatisation," Greens Energy spokesperson Warren Truss said.

But the Australian Energy Market Operator said it accepted that there was pressure for competition.

"It is disappointing that the Government has done so little to ensure competition for the Australian market continues," a spokesperson for AEMO said in a statement.

"As a result, the system that delivers Australian power to homes and businesses continues to become less competitive with other countries," she said.

Cotton farmers struggling with crops due to pesticide use have been protesting against a local government program that allows people to pay up to $6.60 per pound to have their crops sprayed with pesticides.

The program allows farmers to apply in a local garden center and then pick up their crop from the plant. A third party company, the "certification agency," then inspects the crop and verifies the pesticide application.

The farmers say that, if the state allows for such payment for weed control, it will cut into the amount of funding the state receives from the farmers, who usually only pay the crop insurance and the applicators themselves.

"The farmers feel this program would not only damage their livelihood, but also make it harder for them to secure any funding that will help them grow their own food," said Michael McCawse, the chief environmental officer for the Arkansas State Fair.

A local government spokesman said that no one from the Agriculture Department was immediately available.

"I'm not aware of any change to this program. So it's really hard to know if this program is going on or not," the Agriculture Department spokesman said.

The government spokesman added that the program is just one of several programs that is being rolled out for farmers' ability to apply for assistance to pay for weed control.

"There are over a dozen programs in place as part of our initiative to ensure everyone has the right to defend their crops and property, both on and off the land," said Robert Egevall, a spokesman for the agriculture department.

A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Agriculture said the state's insurance program for weed control benefits some farmers. He added that it provides a level of protection to those who don't have insurance.

"These types of programs are not necessary for the average person to have insurance. But because these farmers can use the insurance program for weed control, we will continue to support them in achieving that," said spokesman Matt Saffo.

The farmers are demanding a new state budget that is revenue neutral on weed control. They say that their program allows for them to pay a small portion of their cost for weed control.

At the time of publication, the state's budget committee's website said the weed control program was not an integral part of its $4.6 billion budget.

However, the program allows applicants to pay up to $600 per pound, with up to six applicators to be involved, according to the agency.

Gervais show gets second series order, this one for two

In advance of its new season premiere, Comedy Central unveiled a first look at both the highly anticipated new original series "Grace and Frankie" and its "Grace" spinoff. (Full disclosure, I'm the executive producer of "Grace" and have interviewed and directed a number of executive producers for this upcoming season.)

Grace and Frankie stars Michael Kelly and David Schilling as two equally charming, funny, mischievous, and sometimes completely evil brothers. They share a funny, slightly sad relationship that develops into something special, especially when their childhood friend, Ted (Shirley MacLaine), also shares a similar, sometimes dark, experience with being a struggling comedian.

Kelly, who also stars on "Totally Biased with Samantha Bee," is in "Grace," and Schilling plays Ted's brother-in-law, Joe (Seth Meyers). In both seasons, Kelly and Schilling, along with other Comedy Central staffers have worked on various current and upcoming shows, including "Shark Tank," "The Steve Harvey Show," "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," and more.

"Grace and Frankie" will air weekly on Comedy Central and can be seen here:

"Grace and Frankie" premieres July 11 on Comedy Central.
