But there's something else happening, as well. There's something happening not just between voters and politicians, but across political parties and parties' political parties.
So, while some are happy to give up their votes because no political party can deliver on electoral reform, there is something else going on too. That's the kind of voting that a growing numbers of new voters will want to do on their own.
I met many of them this morning as they went about their jobs — a woman in a car dealership and a small child watching on a television. In many cases these voters don't feel it's necessary to cast their votes for parties they once loved. They want to vote for their favorite candidate and their pet idea.
The most common is that a new electorate will get out and elect politicians who promise to deliver things that people believe they want.
It's not hard to see this changing the face of electoral politics in Canada. The Liberals are trying to woo new voters this way. Mulcair promises to increase transparency in politics and keep the government honest and accountable to Canadians. He's an elected federal leader who, while not a majority, is far better at reaching Canadians than the Conservatives, who haven't gone far enough in Ottawa. And he's more in touch with their concerns.
The Tories are also promising a different kind of politics, one that, if the parties are all to blame for this shift, will likely turn on their leadership.
The NDP's approach of offering ideas, not promises, is a classic example of political pandering to this new voting group. On top of that, Mulcair's promise of a change-the-government model can't succeed because the public knows it has no such changes on offer. And it's precisely this kind of change-the-government approach that's driving some of the change-the-party rhetoric that has turned on its head in the past.
I think we all know what's going to happen. If the Harper Liberals do something to disappoint voters, even if it's just on one issue, that could give a new crop of voters an opening to throw away their party of choice in favour of their own.
But if the change-the-government strategy is working, then what's going to happen? Maybe the big change we were hoping for this spring is finally here, perhaps. Maybe some politicians will have to face the voters.
If that's the case, then perhaps something has changed in Canada — and not just in the electoral system.
